Royalties in the Music Industry are a primary source of revenue

The music industry is known for producing the most talented artists in the world. Producing hits after hits which have been soundtracks to many people’s lives well they get paid from those records. In many numerous ways from songwriting, composing and to the actual sound of the song depending on how it is used through royalties.

Music Royalties are revenue generated and paid to copyright owners from the use of copyrighted composition and recordings of a song in public platforms. Which is a source of income for the music industry including song writers, record labels and publishers. Royalty Payment depends on the deal made between copyright owner and the platform in which their work is being used which could be once off, monthly or quarterly.

A song is divided into two copyrights the composition and the recording. The composition consists of the lyrics and melody of a song. The recording is the song itself meaning the sound of the song. These two formats allow creatives to have the publishing right and master right in the composition and the recording of a song.

The payment of royalties is split according to the owner of these respective categories. For instance, AKA and KDDO have written Company and released the song with a distribution company called Vth season. The song is picked up by as a commercial through a license deal, Vth season will collect the payment on behalf of AKA and KDDO. Take their share according to the agreement and give AKA and KDDO their cut.

There are diverse types of royalties that are generated which include:

  • Sales or Streaming – Revenue will be generated from sales from CD’s and vinyl or in today’s age streaming from music platform such as Apple Music or Spotify, among others. Collected by Publishers and CAPASSO.
  • Licensing – Is there use of music by media platforms such Television, Film and video games. Often collected by Publishers on behalf of songwriters.
  • Public Performance – Is revenue generated from performance rights when a music is performed or broadcasted such a live performance, radio airplay and public broadcast which in South Africa is collected by SAMRO and CAPASSO.
  • Print Royalties – Are royalties from sheet music sales from song writers who release sheet music and is collected by publishers.

Royalties are essential in an artist’s career as their compensate an author’s for art and creativity. The music industry contributes to wide range of factors in entertain whilst impacting lives which make it necessary for royalties. The music industry use them as a form of gaining revenue outside of performances. It is long-term investment for artist, record labels and publishers looking to have a stable income even after an artist’s stops being active. A copyright lasts an author’s lifetime and fifty years after the publication of their work, in which it can be passed down to their surviving beneficiary.
