In South Africa, this year marks 50 years since the District Six forced removals. In February 1966, the apartheid government declared the Cape Town suburb a whites-only area. Over the coming decades, tens of thousands black, coloured and Indian South Africans were forcibly removed from their homes to informal settlements on the outskirts of the city. As part of the commemoration, the District Six Museum is exhibiting some families’ possessions. It’s called The Suitcase Project.
