First a lesson in how Heritage Day was declared: A Shaka (Charka) Day lesson in Political Correctness

In celebration of Heritage Day and National Braai Day, Drive South Africa has created The Complete South African Outdoor Braai Map, which lists 87 outdoor braai spots across all nine provinces of South Africa.

The web-app, which displays the outdoor braai spots on an easy-to-use Google map, allows braai enthusiasts to get directions from their current location directly to their chosen braai spot and also provides information such as opening and closing times as well as entry fee prices.

The South African Braai Directory

Included in the Braai Map is South Africa’s first ‘Braai Directory’, which provides users with useful information on where to buy their food, braai equipment, online braai stores, the best sauces and spices to use, websites to visit for the best braai tips and recipes and many more.

Heritage Day / National Braai Day 2015 events

For those keen on taking their Heritage Day / National Braai Day festivities up a notch, the Braai Map also has a list of Heritage Day and National Braai Day events in Gauteng, the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Limpopo.

Embrace the spirit of an outdoor braai

Renier Van Schalkwyk, IT Manager at the online car rental agency and a braai enthusiast, says the Braai Map was designed to help South Africans embrace the spirit of an outdoor braai.

“Across South Africa, the outside braai is our national pastime. Across cultures, it’s synonymous with a good time. Having it outdoors, fresh air, braais going, it doesn’t matter what you use, wood, charcoal, you have to be outdoors enjoying the sun,” said Van Schalkwyk.

“Use our Braai Map to find the closest outdoor braai spot, where there will surely be lots of people – especially on Heritage Day – with your wood, your grid, your spiced or marinated chicken, your boerewors, steak or lamb chops and make friends with people you’ve never met before,” added Van Schalkwyk.

Submit your favourite South African outdoor braai spot

The online car rental agency’s Braai Map also allows users to submit their own favourite outdoor braai spot to the map if they’re unable to find it.

“We encourage the public to send us their favourite braai spots if it’s not currently listed on the Braai Map. Help us make it the Braai Map South Africa’s biggest braai tool!” added Van Schalkwyk.
