Supports for crucial measures to transport essential service workers

30 March 2020 by Con Tributor

The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape welcomes the Minister of Transport’s announcement to permit taxis and buses to operate from 05:00 to 20:00 in order to cater for the transportation needs of social grant recipients, as effective today 30 March until Friday 3 April 2020.

Daylin Mitchell, MPP says: “The safe, effective transport of social grant recipients and essential workers is a primary concern at this time.”

The DA in the Western Cape is however, alarmed by reports of minibus taxi operators refusing to transport essential workers and incidents of violence by operators against other forms of transport.

MPP Mitchell adds: “We strongly urge the public to assist government by reporting all cases of violence against essential service personnel, who are so vital to curbing the spread of the virus at this time. It is important that the Western Cape Government in increasing the capacity of public transport, as well as the coordination by this government to assist stranded essential workers in travelling to their destinations.”

The DA in the Western Cape is committed to enforcing the rules to protect the lives of our road users, and provide a safe, reliable transport network for essential workers during this epidemic.
