The City of Cape Town’s Transport Infrastructure Implementation Department has recently completed the remedial works along the Welcome Zenzile Road link. This after a portion of the embankment slopes of this road eroded due to a sewage spill caused by a blockage in the overloaded sewer system. The road links Ndlulamthi Street in Khayelitsha with Ntlolokshane Street in Kuyasa in Khayelitsha, is 280m long and elevated by 5m.
Pedestrian walkways are included on both sides of the Welcome Zenzile Road link.
The new road links two communities in Kuyasa in Khayelitsha, which were previously separated by a stormwater channel, providing improved access between the two areas. The use of this road had to be temporarily restricted after a portion of the embankment was eroded by a sewage spill caused by a blockage in the overloaded sewage system.
‘I am happy to see that the remedial works are finally completed and the road now fully operational, meaning, the residents can now again reap the benefits of this road link. These include better access for motorists and pedestrians between the two areas, and significant improvement in terms of health and safety for the communities that were using this open space as a short cut. As a bonus, the communities can now enjoy social connection. The officials have assured me that they have tested the structural integrity of the link and that it is now safe and secured to last for many years to come. I also want to make use of the opportunity to thank the community for their patience while we were doing the repair work, and for their support,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
