Melikaya Defending His Title At The Colchester Development 10km Run

22 January 2024 by Con Tributor

Top Nelson Mandela Bay road runner, Melikhaya Frans, will be defending his title this weekend at the Colchester Development 10km Run, which is part of the Legacy Project, sponsored by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, since 2016.

The Colchester Development Run will take place from Mackay Bridge Angling Club in Colchester on Saturday, 27 January.

Melikhaya, who runs for Ikhamva athletic Club, first won this race in 2018 and is looking forward to a strong finish.

Last year he led from the start with his fifth win of this event in 0.29.32.

“I am fit and injury free,” confirmed Frans.

Race organizer and Ikhamva athletics club coach, Michael Mbambani, confirmed that he was looking forward to the 8 th edition of the Colchester 10km on Saturday.

“We are expecting good numbers and fast times, as it is the first time since it’s inception that we are hosting this race in summer and it will include the EPA 10km Championships,” added Mbambani.

Families are invited to join either the 5km or 10km distance and the beautiful Sundays River area.

The event will include a 10km starting at 06h00 and a 5km starting at 06h30, with the prize giving taking place at 07h45, and the cut-off for both events is 07h40. Runners will also be eligible for lucky draw attendance prizes.

The cost for 10km run is R100, 10km Juniors will receive free entry, 10km runners aged over 60 and 69 years, will pay R50. The temporary license, required for the 10km only, is R50. R30 is the entry fee for the 5km Family Run.

Online entries are available on www.webtickets.co.za and will close on Tuesday, 23 January 2024.

Late entries and race number collections will be available on Friday, 26 January at Westbourne Oval from 14.00 – 18.00, and late entries will also be accepted on the morning of the race from 05.00.
